Small Change India : Ladakh Loves You

By Karl Greenwood - 7th August, 2011

On Friday 5 August 2011, we flew out to Leh. You are instantly absorbed by the idyllic landscape Leh has to offer, where huge caramel colored mountains dominate the landscape.  Our first few days had us all resting as we had to acclimatize to our surroundings due to the altitude.

On Saturday 6 August, we visited the school to confirm the schedule for the week with the teacher, Stanzin, and to have a look around. We also introduced ourselves to some of the pupils who were incredibly friendly and polite, but a little shy. Discipline will not be an issue with these girls!

In the late afternoon we went to a special event to commemorate the one year anniversary of the flooding in Leh in August 2010. As I entered the event, I was instantly overwhelmed by the thousands of people, most of them wearing yellow hats purposely designed to mark the occasion, who came to show their support and pay their respects to those affected by the floods.  The hats said 'Ladakh Loves You' and this captured a real sense of unity and peace amongst the local people. The hats acted as a 'uniform' to show the togetherness and spirit of the people of Leh. It was a great and heartwarming experience being there.

The event also acknowledged the people and organisations such as Seeds, who provide support and aid to the area of Leh to help rebuild people’s lives. I can't wait for us to start running the lessons in school tomorrow.
