Martin Parr preview at New Art Gallery Walsall

By Claire Wearn - 19th January, 2012

The New Art Gallery Walsall show an interim exhibition of the work Martin has made from 2011 in Walsall.  After spending the first year in Sandwell, and showing that part of the archive in The Public in 2010, we are now showing the next phase of the project with the New Art Gallery Walsall who are one of the partners on Black Country Stories.  Throughout 2011, Martin visited markets, shops, gyms, dog clubs, rabbit clubs, foundries, factories and local celebrations including the street parties back in April for the Royal Wedding as featured in The Guardian; see press articles here

This interim show at NAGW gives the opportunity to to look through the hundreds of photographs that Martin took over the course of the year as well as a small number of selected large prints.

The preview evening coincided with Mark Power giving his talk locally at Walsall College, again as part of the Black Country project, and so those students came along afterwards with Mark to see Martin's show.  There were several familiar faces and it was a great chance to find out more about what people thought should be included in this portrait of the region.  There are comment cards asking 'what are the best bits of the Black Country' which attracted several offerings, so far mostly about food and the accents.  The French Connection cafe in Stourbridge is a MUST so we'll be there in 2013! You can contribute your ideas too by emailing Multistory or visiting the gallery.

Martin's show finishes at NAGW on 7th April 2012.

Thank you to Laura Dicken for photos from the evening and ongoing support to the project.. The Trumpet was a top tip for Bilston!
