Martin Parr in Wolverhampton
Martin Parr's first shoot in Wolverhampton
By Claire Wearn - 24th November, 2011
Martin will spend 2012 in the Wolverhampton and surrounding borough as the next phase of the Black Country Stories project after being in Sandwell and Walsall to date.
We started with trips to Goodyear Dunlop, The Molineux, Wilcox textile processing plant, the markets, Civic Hall, The Mander and Wulfrun Centres, barber shops, unique clubs and bars, private recording studios as well as general meandering around the city centre streets.
We were lucky enough to time the shoot during a week when a number of one-off events were taking place. The Civic was hosting the Darts Grand Slam and The Robin 2 in Bilston were celebrating the music of a Bilston based band formed in 1959 with their farewell gig to a packed out venue of rock and rollers. The band called Danny Canon and The Ramrods entertained an emotional crowd including their fanclub of 50 years. See full article here:
At JMP Wilcox there was a fruitful exchange of knowledge between Martin and the manager of the book recycling department Chantelle. After running a search to see if any of Martin's books had turned up in their depository, which they hadn't, Chantelle explained to Martin about the different book status each publication has according to Amazon and showed him how to find his own status which turned out to be rather good!! Martin returned the favour by helping Chantelle to search online for the value of a personalised 16thC bible that she had in the office.
