Martin revisits West Bromwich

By Claire Wearn - 23rd November, 2011

Having spent time in the Sandwell borough since 2010, there were still some special places that we wanted Martin to revist.  Among them were Alpro Foundry on Watton Street in West Bromwich and Hadley Group in Oldbury.  The traditional foundry is like stepping back in time with molten metal being hand-poured to make aluminium products.  The metal forming site for Hadley Group however was contrastingly modern and just one of the many sites they run as they have sustained a competitive business through difficult economic times and proven to be local success story in business with several international branches.

Martin also visited the historic site of Avery Weigh Tronix which once was the thriving site of Avery Scales manufacturing employing huge numbers in it's hey-day.  Still operational and occupying the same site in Foundry Lane, Smethwick, nowadays Weigh-Tronix has all the traces of it's past but a skeleton crew.  As you exit the drive out is framed by The Foundry pub which you can imagine would have been heaving with local workers at lunchtime.. however it still serves the biggest gut-busting breakfast in teh area to a loyal crowd.
