The Sandwell Foghorn in the Making
By Chloe Brown - 23rd June, 2011
Today I went down to Fereday Cylinder Co. with Karl and Ian (Ian has been commissioned to make the Foghorn). My ears are still ringing, (mainly from the extremely loud radio) but it was great to see the pieces of the foghorn taking shape and all the hard work everyone is putting in. It's great to see the process - From Julian finding the images, to drawing the plans and now getting each piece cut and rolled. See Julian's log about finding the original image here.
It is going to be huge! The pieces have all been laser cut and you can see them here being laid out and marked ready to be bent into a faceted cone. There are six sections of the foghorn and the largest four sections are having to be made in quarters so it can be easily transported...
The film shows a quarter of the largest section being bent - so it gives you an idea of the size. I also have some film of the second smallest section being rolled which I'll put on at a later date (need to edit it a bit) but I did get some stills you can see.
The finish is great as it is really reflective and will really catch the light when it goes on its tour of the Borough over the summer.
Next stage is for Ian to get these sections into his workshop and start to weld and bolt and weld some more before testing it out in a couple of weeks...
The finished Foghorn will be unveiled on Saturday 9 July in Queens Square Shopping Centre
