Eight artists/organisations were commissioned to deliver a variety of projects between February - May 2009, using music, performance, photography, film and other media to engage local residents and provide opportunities for the community to join together to celebrate the area in which they live.
A brief outline of each project is shown below:
Simon Poulter is the lead artist on the Beyond Bricks programme. He is helping Multistory document and evaluate the programme’s outcomes and outputs through written and visual representation. He is also carrying out his own project in the area.
Redhawk Logistica’s ‘United Colours of Benny’s Town’ project involves working with local residents and tradesmen in Lozells to paint private/public spaces to improve the aesthetics of the area and bring more colour into the community.
Andrew Jackson is using photography and film to portray the lives of some of the people living in Lozells and East Handsworth.
Geese Theatre and Mothers In Pain are working together to deliver a project for parents, families and friends of people killed or injured in gun, knife or gang related crime in Lozells and East Handsworth.
Aspire and Succeed is creating a documentary film about living in Lozells in the present day but also looking at its heritage, history and the future. The film will include a number of interviews with a wide range of local residents.
Anna Francis and Katie Shipley ask the people of Lozells and East Handsworth to ‘Give Me your Hand’. The project raises aspirations through a series of performances and workshops looking at the universal qualtities of hands and what we can do with our hands.
Building Bridges is a community music project taking place in Lozells and East Handsworth, delivered by Sound it Out’s Infusion Ensemble. The project will involve young people, their parents and community members to participate in creating their own music and lyrics, creatively reflecting on the area’s diversity and the regeneration taking place.
Audiences Central’s will provide evaluation of the Beyond Bricks programme. They will produce information about how communities access cultural activity and undertake an audit of existing cultural activity in the area.
