Project Overview:
As part of Sandwell Slavery Remembrance Project, and to commemorate the Bi-Centenary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the children studied key figures from the abolitionist movement that have a strong association with Sandwell and the Black Country.
Each of the primary schools received suitcases full of resources and artefacts for their year group that represented one of five historical figures along with a blank mini-figure for the children to customise to represent a figure they most identifed with. This gave the pupils a starting point for their own research and encouraged them to explore what it would have been like to live as a slave or be part of the abolitionist movement. The children used their research to draw pictures and write their own poems and stories and come up with ideas of how to decorate their small figure.
Following on from the work done with the schools, over 250 figures that the children created, together with a selection of their drawings, poems and stories, were exhibited at the Queens Square Shopping Centre in West Bromwich from Monday 26 November until Monday 17 December 2007.
Councillor Linda Horton, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for culture & leisure, said: “This excellent project has used interesting and innovative ways to engage children in learning about the slave trade and abolitionist movement. Now people visiting West Bromwich town centre will have the chance to see the exciting work pupils have produced.”
