Project Overview:
Baby Talk was one of the 8 activities from year one that aimed improve the speech and language skills of 3-5 year olds. A sound artist, Geoff Broadway, worked with groups of children to create a ’soundscape’ made through a vocal exploration of the sounds they created.

The outcomes for this project were:

  • Increased understanding of the importance of listening and speaking within children.
  • Increased self awareness and expression.
  • Increased confidence in making and experimenting with sounds.
  • Children will be able to connect visual abstract ideas to the physical experience of sound making.

Further info.

It was a fun exploration of sounds and noises for children to hear and make using their voices and instruments to accompany a variety of visual stimuli. Children were encouraged to express themselves and communicate in new and unusual ways as they made connections between visually abstract ideas to the experience of sound making.

They explored different emotional responses and their own self awareness as they were given the opportunity to hear themselves played back. The sessions helped to develop their listening skills, as well as increasing their confidence to be expressive and play with sounds whilst being heard by their peers.

  1. Quiet children have become chatty. Children who accessed the activity talked more freely together during free play.
