Project Overview:

Over three sessions Polarbear (AKA Steven Camden) put a contemporary spin on the idea of the nursery rhyme. Through imaginative play, craft activities and rhyme the children explored the topic of animals. The planned outcomes for this activity were:

  • Practitioners/ parents will be more aware of how nursery rhymes and descriptive play can help support speech and language development.
  • Increased descriptive language skills in the children.
  • Increased confidence in the children.
  • Children explore new words and sounds as they start to create their own rhymes and play descriptive word games.
  • Children begin to explore the mechanics of rhyming words together.

Further info.

The basis of each session was Polarbear’s specially devised ‘Animal Rhyme’ which was accompanied by a series of actions. The workshops were very lively and Polarbear’s enthusiasm was contagious! The groups often got swept up in the Bus Ride Game which sees them climb aboard an imaginary bus and go on magical journeys into the jungle, to the North Pole or wherever else their imaginations take them. The sessions were highly interactive and the children’s ideas shaped the activity.

The craft element of the session provided a good balance with the more energetic parts of the workshop. The children worked to make masks as well as creating collages of the animals that appeared in the rhyme using a range of different arts materials. Polarbear also explored the idea of rhyming words with the children through a series of exercises. Each child was given their own book in which to do their drawing, collages and written work. This book was then kept in the setting for follow on activities once the sessions were over or could be taken home and shared with the child’s family.

  2. The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and the pace of them meant that they were all involved. They do need lots of help and they had the opportunity to shine and have a real sense of enjoyment. Staff picked up ideas which they could try.
