Project Overview:
As part of the Time to Talk programme to improve speech and language skills of 3-5 year olds, Multistory developed a creative professional development (CPD) programme for practitioners and teachers to give them the skills to continue the activities delivered by the artists on the programme. The programme was developed in conjunction with The Playhouse Theatre in Education and the Time to Talk artists.

The CPD gave the practitioners increased skills and confidence in using creative arts activities. It explored the transferable skills used by artists in the Time to Talk programme and made them relevant and accessible for the practitioners to use. The practitioners were given support to create and implement creative activities over a 4 week period before sharing their experiences and gaining more skills in a second day of training. The programme provided the practitioners with new and exciting ways to engage their groups through a very practical and creative training experience.

Further info.

The success of the CPD resulted in increased funding to provide ‘twilight’ training opportunitiesin order to reach those teachers unable to attend during the day and to open the training to key stage 1 and 2 teachers, not just early years. It provided a scaled down, quick creative ‘toolkit’ version of the full CPD programme plus a resource pack to enable the practitioners to implement the activities themselves, mapped against EYFS criteria. We have also developed loan resource packs of the Multistory puppets and light boxes for nurseries and schools across Sandwell to access from The Children’s Fund.

  1. It gave us some focused ideas using a story and how to adapt to different age groups within a thematic curriculum. We have used the techniques with nursery, year 1 and year 2. One teacher from year five went to the twilight training and has used the techniques. We are looking at doing a training day in school so all the staff can use these methods. By using the one basic idea and adapting to different age groups we have used it pretty much through both key stages 1 and 2 and will develop that even further.

  2. The training has made me realise how easy it is to ‘be creative’ at a variety of levels.

  3. It has given me ideas to develop the curriculum in a much more creative way - thinking outside the box – it will enable children to experience dance / movement and art and to improve their writing.
