Project Overview:
Multistory artists worked with groups of children to explore a multisensory environment that was installed at the setting which was inspired by light and dark and influenced by Reggio Emilia methodologies.

The outcomes for this project were:

  • Children develop creative interpretation skills.
  • Children are increasingly able to articulate their understanding of the space.
  • Children develop imaginative play techniques.
  • Early years’ staff and / or parents develop observation and documentation skills.
  • There is improved dialogue between children and early years staff and / or parents.

Further info.

Transform is an alternative environment contained within a stand-alone series of structures that was conceived and developed by Multistory with help from external consultants. In essence, it consists of a series of lightproof tents which connect via fabric tunnels. In each of the tents is a light source which offers varying degrees of control via switches and dials. In addition, miscellanous play materials are provided to enhance the experience and to ignite the children’s imaginations.

Ultimately Transform creates an environment that is a totally new experience for the children and, as such, creates a whole new world for their imagination to interact with. The artists are facilitators in these sessions, allowing the children the freedom to explore the structure and its elements at their own pace.

  1. A lot of the children concentrated for far longer than they had done on classroom based activities and a lot of the boys wanted to write with the pens in the UV area.
