Telling Tales: Visions: Visions of Oldbury Revealed

On Tuesday 29th January 2008 as part of the Oldbury Good Citizens Awards 2007, the results our Telling Tales: Visions project were revealed.

The project began several months ago, with Multistory and photographer Megan Taylor talking to residents of the town to discover those people, places and activities that could be considered a ‘Vision of Oldbury’. Our journey took us to many locations across the town, uncovering everything from bee keepers, brass bands, Europe’s largest Hindu Temple and some of the oldest buildings in the borough. Over 100 photographs were taken, but we needed to narrow our selection down to a final 25 images that would be used by Oldbury Town Team. The Oldbury Ward members looked over the initial selection and helped us come up with a shortlist of 45 images that we could take back to the residents of Oldbury, who would vote for the final 25.

A specially created website , where residents could rate each photograph went live on 10th December 2007 and by the closing date for voting 4 weeks later we had received over 9000 hits. We also did 3 ‘live voting’ days in the centre of Oldbury where, even on some of the coldest days this Winter, 70 residents joined us to cast their vote.

We would like to thank everyone that took the time to vote, and all the residents, community groups and organisations who helped make this project possible.

And now we can reveal the 25 images that have been selected as -

“An excellent project with photographs showing the area in a good light and giving an impression of the many activities available in Oldbury.” Mary Prestidge.

“Thank you for the photos of my home town.” Valerie Blewitt.

“Born and raised in Tower Rd, I am familiar with most pictures. I have lived in Canada for 40 years and on trips back to Oldbury I am amazed at the transformation, what a change. Keep up the good work.” Derek Foy.

“The photos are lovely reminders of the Black Country area and the people who made Britain ‘Great’.” Marion Szczesniak.

These images will initially appear on a set of banner stands, which will be used by Oldbury Town Team and when in a Postcard Book, which will be available in mid February from the Town Team. You can find the contact details and more information about your Town Team here.
